If you were to look at a postcard of the Mona Lisa in front of the painting itself you may be surprised by the difference in colour between the two. This is because the photographer will have lit the painting in such a way as to create the most attractive postcard possible. However, this image will not be of much use to a researcher studying, for instance, the colours of the Mona Lisa, nor will it be any good for printing an ‘exact’ facsimile of the painting.
