Raphael’s drawings, Horace Walpole’s Collection

A series of eight original drawings by Raphael, including The Holy family with Lamb, were recorded with the Lucida 3D scanner in 2015 at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.

This is the first time high-resolution texture data could be obtained from these drawings’ flat surface and made it easy, therefore, to detect pouncing marks along the drawn lines. Different rendering modes were used to highlight these details, which contour the work’s main figures. Furthermore, conservators at the Ashmolean Museum are able to check, modify and add their own layers of information to this data through the use of Factum Foundation’s online multilayer browser. This is an ongoing research project which will encourage the spread of knowledge and the dissemination of the importance of influential works of art.
